Yesterday, May 1st., 2008, was the official release date of Etomite Prelude v1.0 which marks a major milestone in development. This release will prove to be the most stable and feature-rich release to date. The number of bug fixes, improvements, and overall performance enhancements is far too great to list them all here. Suffice it to say, a lot has changed. Anyone who is running an older release of Etomite is encouraged to upgrade. You won’t be disappointed.

So, what are some of the new features? Here is a short list:

New manager skin

New default page template

New default installation content

New default snippets

Chunks now utilize permissions

Integrated new release of EditArea code highlighter/editor

Integrated new release of TinyMCE

Integrated new pop-up calendar for date selections

Addressed virtually all Bug Tracker issues

Fixed multiple hidden bugs in the Etomite parser and API functions

The following configuration options were added to the Etomite configuration panel:

Added global manager date display format selection

Added global manager time display format selection

Added empty cache default setting for documents

Added show in menu default setting for documents

Added Enable/Disable manager audit trail option

Added maximum number of login attempts setting

Added SQL debugger option

Added Snippet debugger option

Added Enable/Disable embedded PHP option

Added inline viewable filetypes setting for the file manager

Added viewable filetypes setting for the file manager

Added editable filetypes setting for the file manager

Added exclude paths setting for the file manager

Added maximum upload size setting for the file manager (and elsewhere)

Added display link-back to Etomite option

One major modification that was incorporated into the code base relates to how hosts are configuring newer versions of PHP on their servers. Issues with the PHP include_path setting were becoming a major problem and there was no easy solution. Re-writing every include statement within the entire code base was the only effective solution to the problem. This fix has been tested on at least one server known to exhibit this problem and everything is working perfectly.

The list goes on and on but this is all I can think of at the moment. While the new resources mentioned earlier won’t be installed during upgrades they will be installed if a new full installation is performed. That about wraps it up for now. This release marks the end of development of the Prelude code base branch and only minor bugs will be addressed from this point on. I need to rest up so we can get started on the next major release.

THE END

Yes, as Dean has stated elsewhere, Etomite Prelude v1.0 is coming… Trust me, it can’t happen soon enough… While it’s still the Prelude code base a lot has changed… Once this release is out I will be diverting virtually all development efforts to the next major release branch…

While I could list as many changes as I can remember here it’ll be better to just let people do an Easter Egg Hunt to find the changes… I honestly can’t even remember every change that has been made - there are that many… I have gone over virtually every line of code in the code base, or so it seems, and even fixed more than a few bugs that I stumbled across by accident…

Just to hint a bit, whether you do a fresh install or an upgrade you will be redirected into the Etomite configuration panel as soon as you enter the manager… Suffice it to say that some of the changes will jump right out as you verify and edit the system settings…

As an additional hint, you should almost never need to edit the parser manually…

Oh yeah, the manager has been re-skinned by Ian (Cathode)…

Hmmm…??? What else…???

Ahhh… There are now three options for new installs - Full, Lite, and Bare… Bare really is bare as it only sets up an admin user - period… I will try to get some documentation written on how to build your own custom installation file… I might as well mention it here that whether performing a new install or an upgrade you need to run the installer…

Chunks now have permissions just like templates, documents, and snippets…

Everyone who has tested v1.0 seems to think it’s faster…

The default full install resources are, uh, different…

It still is not a portal…

Prelude v1.0 is stable… It is currently powering well over a dozen sites without a glitch, even Windows servers…

Upgrades take less than 5 minutes once the new code base has been uploaded… Read the README file before uploading - it’ll save time and aggravation…

If you’re not completely satisfied we’ll give you a 100% refund of the purchase price… Oh, yeah, it’s still FREE…

Enough teasing… Soon, rabbit, soon…

I’m probably going to take some flack over the use of Wordpress for the blog, but I’m a firm believer that there’s no point re-inventing the wheel; wordpress is a perfectly good piece of blogging software. Why should Ralph take time out of completing Etomite 1.0 to write something when Wordpress is freely available and ready for me to use. Etomite’s a CMS, not a blog app.

Edit: I’ve successfully imported the Blog posts (relating to Etomite) from Ralph’s Personal site.

– The Newsletter –

(1) WEBSITE CHANGES
Finally! All the website changes have been implemented.
This is what I’ve done…
We now have a single server dedicated to just the mySQL aspect of the Etomite website. It’s right next to the http server that Etomite’s being served from.
Last week (the tail end of), I experimented with LightTPD on the Etomite website. Personally, for this size of a site, it wasn’t for us - besides, the quirky issues it created were a PITA (like the old snippet library issues); I’ve now returned to Apache for our needs. It doesn’t use that much more memory.
The actual control aspect of the server is controlled by LXAdmin, whereas before it was cPanel - cPanel is a resource hog for what we need it for; we only needed the basic of control functions (I’m now using it on all of my small VPS’es).

(2) SITE SPONSORSHOP
Just incase you didn’t know, we no longer have a “free provider” like we did before - this way we have more control on every aspect of the site.
As you can see (from the footer of the site), I’m currently sponsoring the payment for the hosting. What we need is some people to sponsor the hosting costs.
Sponsoring involves sending us the money to pay for it for a month, and in return you get your website URL at the bottom of every generated page across the Etomite website, for a month.
The cost is as follows: $65 per month.
If you’re looking to sponsor the hosting cost, then e-Mail/PM me; and let me know which month you are looking to sponsor the site for (if you’re running an advertising campaign for example).

(3) DOWNLOAD UPDATES
I’ve updated the Download page on the main site.
I’ve also implemented a three-server download facility. What it is is three servers which are linked to a reverse-proxy. These servers will serve downloads of the core package (don’t worry, we aren’t getting rid of SourceForge; it’ll be good as an alternative to waiting for SF to copy the packages to all the mirrors).
What the reverse-proxy will do is load-balance the downloads; so if a lot of people are downloading from one server, the next downloader will get it from the next server.
The new page also includes SHA-1 Checksum information for your security. If the checksum is not correct when you download it, let us know ASAP to investigate.
We’ve also archived all the previous versions of Etomite on the site - obviously we don’t advise that you use an old version (as we also don’t support it). They are just provided for archival purposes.

(4) ETOMITE TOOLBAR
We now have a (Firefox and IE) Browser Toolbar available for download; which includes links to our website, and also feeds RSS from our website straight to your browser (so you can see unread posts).
I’ve added the Etomite…Live! Template RSS feed to the toolbar, which should have been pushed to user’s toolbars now - it means that when I release a new template on EtomiteLive.com, it’ll update the RSS feed in your browser so you can go straight to the page.

(5) MONITOR YOUR SITE UPTIME
Want to monitor the uptime of your site? Want to be alerted when it goes down? Sign up for free - you are automatically upgraded for the first 14 days, onto our premium service, then downgraded to the free one after the trial.
Remember, after your trial period, It’ll downgrade you to the free account, which I believe is a single test (60? minute interval). You can choose to upgrade if you wish back up to the professional level (prices are on the site).

(6) UPCOMING RELEASE
If you aren’t a regular reader of the forums, then maybe you should wink.gif
Ralph made an announcement recently regarding the next version of Etomite; It’s not going to be called 0.6.1.5 but actually 1.0
We believe that The Etomite Core has got to the stage where it’s stable.
Therefore; prior to release of 1.0, we need to know if there are any outstanding bugs that have not been addressed. If there are any, it’s vital that you sign up for our bug-tracker and add the issue there.

(7) NEWSLETTER CLOSURE
Well this is the first Etomite Newsletter; hopefully not the last. It was sent out using IPB’s built in mailer, but I hope to switch to server-side software in the near future.
This year there’s been a few changes - I just hope that you all like the changes in Etomite 1.0! They’re awesome!

Kind Regards,
